Set in the rural Essex countryside, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is Europe's largest surviving WW1 aerodrome with a century of history, and is a unique and poignant reminder of a different time, commemorating the earliest days of aerial combat and the origins and proud tradition of the Royal Air Force.

This site has immense historical significance and is considered unique as no other near-complete World War One aerodrome remains in England. It has many of its original buildings in situ which are currently undergoing restoration to bring the site back to its former glory.

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome was established in September 1916 as a home defence base and it played a pivotal role in helping to defend the British mainland from attacks by German Zeppelin airships and Gotha fixed-wing bombers during World War One. There’s plenty to enjoy including a fascinating Squadron Museum, a brand new exhibition, hangars of late production and replica WW1 planes and a war-time café and Airmen’s Mess. Learn about the incredible work being done by specialist contractors and by volunteers who are painstakingly conserving the buildings on site.

Inclusions:
  • Enjoy an hour guided tour, and tea/coffee and homemade cake on arrival.

Layer Marney Tower is a beautiful Tudor building surrounded by formal gardens and parkland with magnificent views to the Blackwater Estuary. Built of soft red brick, with a delightful warm tone, Layer Marney Tower achieves an extraordinary synthesis of grandeur and intimacy, that has delighted visitors ever since the Marney's began construction around 1515. What stands today is a small part of Henry, 1st Lord Marney's dream. He was Lord Privy Seal to Henry VIII, and he intended his palace to surpass, in both size and grandeur, Cardinal Wolsey's similar work at Hampton Court. He died in 1523 and his son died two years later. they had finished the church, stable block and front side of the courtyarded palace. Layer Marney Tower is the tallest Tudor Gatehouse in the country.

Accessibility: The tower has 99 steps. Most of the visitors are elderly – some just do one floors. It is rare no one can do the walk tower

Inclusions:
  • Experience a 2 hour guided tour with one of owners of tower.
