Lewes Castle is one of the oldest castles in England. It was built soon after the Norman Conquest and Battle of Hastings in 1066 by William de Warenne, a close friend and one of the most distinguished followers of William the Conqueror. It is one of only two castles in England with two mottes. One was on high ground overlooking the River Ouse and the second more imposing one linked by a ditch and fence to the town wall. Part of the shell keep built on the second mound survives and dates from about 1080. Climb the steep zig zag steps to the keep to get stunning panoramic views of the Sussex countryside all the way from the Downs to the coast.

A magnificent barbican was added in the 14th century and today this is the best preserved part of the castle. The Barbican House museum houses a fine archaeological collection, including delicate prehistoric flints, fine Roman pottery, Saxon weapons and medieval gold rings. New developments include interactive displays, replanted gardens and a new medieval gallery and audio-visual show telling the story of Lewes and the Castle from prehistoric to medieval times.

Accessibility:

  • The castle: due to the historic nature of the site access is limited to ground level for anyone who has difficulty walking. There is an accessible pavilion in the Gun Garden with panels depicting the panorama visible from the top of the keep. Assistance dogs are welcome and some interpretation panels are in braille.
  • The museum: there is a small flight of steps down to the ground floor galleries and another, larger, flight up to those on the first floor. Due to the historic nature of the building there is no lift.

Inclusions:
  • Free Flow visit

The British Airways i360 in Brighton is the world’s tallest moving observation tower.

Take a voyage to the skies and see Sussex as you have never seen it before. Glide up slowly to 450 feet high to enjoy breath-taking views of up to 26 miles from the world’s first vertical cable car, designed by the London Eye architects.

Visitors will board a fully enclosed aerodynamically shaped pod at pavement level. During its 20-minute ride, the pod will rise to a height of 138 metres giving visitors 360 degree panoramic views across Brighton and Hove before returning to ground level. On a clear day, visitors will be able to see for 25 miles, to Eastbourne in the east and to Bognor Regis in the west, taking in views of the South Downs National Park and the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head.

The spacious pod will have full disabled access and room for up to 200 visitors per ride to stand at the edge and look out, with plenty of space to move around and see the view from different angles. It will be heated and air-conditioned to ensure all-year-round comfort. A host will welcome visitors, point out sights and explain some of the history of Brighton and Hove, the West Pier and the design and engineering of the i360.
