The Savill Garden

Discover a unique Royal garden full of hidden treasures from all around the world.

Britain's finest ornamental garden, The Savill Garden is a true wonder. It's a garden for all seasons and a place of beauty and colour that's loved by horticulturalists and enthusiasts alike.

In 1932, Queen Mary gave Sir Eric Savill permission to to develop a 35-acre garden in Windsor Great Park. Since then, many others (under the watchful eyes of Kings and Queens) have been on a tireless quest to add their own expertise and creativity. Visitors can journey through 35 acres of interconnecting gardens and exotic woodland. Every garden has its own unique attraction, featuring a distinctive group of plants that introduce a fresh burst of vibrant colour throughout the seasons. The Rose Garden, opened by H.M. the Queen in 2010, is a magnificent addition. Designed by Andrew Wilson, visitors can wander the swirls of rose beds and enjoy the perfume at its best from a walkway that rises into the centre of the Rose Garden.

Windsor Castle

The great Royal Palace of Windsor Castle dominates the skyline of this delightful, historic town nestling on the banks of the Thames.

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. Established in the 11th century by William The Conqueror, it has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years. Today it is used regularly for ceremonial and State occasions and Her Majesty The Queen spends most of her private weekends at the Castle, and her standard flies from the Round Tower when she is in residence.

As the perfect start to your visit, you can join a free 30-minute tour of the Castle Precincts. Led by one of the Castle Wardens, dressed in their striking red and black Windsor livery, the tour introduces the Castle’s 900-year history as a fortress and palace, and its role today as an official residence of The Queen. Then expore the magnificent State Apartments which are furnished with some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto. Be amazed at Queen Mary's Dolls’ House, the largest, most beautiful and most famous dolls’ house in the world, created in the 1920s and filled with thousands of objects made by leading craftsmen, artists and designers of the time.

Your admission also includes St George’s Chapel (except for Sunday visits). Set within the Castle Precincts, this is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in England. Ten monarchs are buried here, including Henry VIII and Charles I.

During the autumn / winter months, the sumptuous private apartments created by George IV, the Semi-State Rooms, are added to the visitor route. Richly decorated, these additional five rooms are used by The Queen for hosting her guests and are only available to visit during this period.

On selected dates, you can also stand to attention whilst watching the Changing of the Guard! A colourful spectacle of British Pageantry, the privilege of guarding the Sovereign has been carried out since 1660. Weather permitting, the ceremony begins at 11am and lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Entry includes admission to the Castle, a multimedia tour (available in nine languages) and a Precincts Tour in English. As a working royal palace, the Castle is used frequently by The Queen for State ceremonies and official entertaining, and closures can occur throughout the year. Please check opening arrangements by visiting their website.

Windsor Castle offers something for everyone, and with so many areas to explore it is suggested to allow at least 3 hours to see it all.
