The great Royal Palace of Windsor Castle dominates the skyline of this delightful, historic town nestling on the banks of the Thames.
Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. Established in the 11th century by William The Conqueror, it has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years. Today it is used regularly for ceremonial and State occasions and Her Majesty The Queen spends most of her private weekends at the Castle, and her standard flies from the Round Tower when she is in residence.
As the perfect start to your visit, you can join a free 30-minute tour of the Castle Precincts. Led by one of the Castle Wardens, dressed in their striking red and black Windsor livery, the tour introduces the Castle’s 900-year history as a fortress and palace, and its role today as an official residence of The Queen. Then explore the magnificent State Apartments which are furnished with some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto.
On selected dates, you can also stand to attention whilst watching the Changing of the Guard! A colourful spectacle of British Pageantry, the privilege of guarding the Sovereign has been carried out since 1660. Weather permitting, the ceremony begins at 11am and lasts approximately 30 minutes.
Windsor Castle offers something for everyone, and with so many areas to explore it is suggested to allow at least 3 hours to see it all.
