Penderyn Distillery is the only distillery in Wales, one of the smallest distilleries in the world and the first to legally distil a whisky spirit in Wales for more than 100 years.

Penderyn Distillery opened its doors to visitors in June 2008 with the launch of its new purpose designed and built Visitor Centre. You can now enjoy a distillery tour, take a journey through the history of single malt whisky making in Wales, and understand the distilling process at first hand. The aim of opening the distillery to visitors is to educate and inform people about the ancient art of distilling whisky and to demonstrate the differences between Penderyn's process and the distilling of Scottish, Irish and American whiskies.

Penderyn Single Malt Whisky was launched by His Royal Highness Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, on 1st March 2004 at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff. Since then, Penderyn Single Malt Whisky has experienced considerable success. It is now found on the shelves of both supermarkets and specialist whisky shops throughout the UK and is distributed to 16 countries, including 28 US states. Penderyn Single Malt Whisky has also won high critical acclaim and a number of prestigious international whisky awards and medals, and is now considered one of the world's finest premium whiskies.

After a guided tour of the distillery, visit the tasting room and have a chance to sample two Penderyn products.

Please note: For safety reasons the venue cannot permit under-16s, or anyone in a wheelchair, into the main distillery production area. An alternative route available if required – please let us know if you require this route at least 4 weeks prior to the visit. This route includes an aspect of self-guiding, viewing the process from behind a screen and joining the main distillery tour at a later stage. Any under-16s taking this alternative route must be accompanied by an adult. Flat sensible footwear is required, and no phones or cameras are to be used.

Due to Health & Safety, a maximum of 20 customers are allowed in the distillery at any one time. Groups above 20 will therefore be split accordingly with staggered entry to the distillery.

Inclusions:
  • An hour-long tour with tasting.

Caerphilly Castle

Caerphilly Castle is the biggest castle in Wales. Like the famous cheese, the castle has long been synonymous with Caerphilly. It dominates. Hogs the limelight. Think slumbering giant awaiting a call to arms, and it sprawls over a huge area.

Although not quite complete, the iconic fortress is mighty impressive, surrounded by a series of moats and watery islands. The castle is the brainchild of Gilbert ‘the Red’ de Clare, a redheaded nobleman of Norman descent, who’s early attempts at building the castle were thwarted by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. Gilbert eventually succeeded to build a mammoth stronghold using the concentric ‘walls within walls’ system of defence. Climb to the rooftop of the massive east gatehouse, and from here you can see the rings of stone and water defences that made Caerphilly such a stronghold. Explore the dark passage known as the Braose Gallery and look out for the south-east tower - which out leans Pisa’s famous tower - and the mighty siege engines and special firing events. The castle is a favourite backdrop for TV and films and secured a starring role in the BBC TV series of Merlin and Doctor Who.

Recommended visit time of approx. 1 hour. There are central level paved areas but access to towers may be difficult for some visitors due to steps and slopes.
